How to compare school bus parts prices

For school districts, contractors and fleet shops buying replacement parts: how to compare suppliers on the real cost of getting a part onto the bus, not just the sticker price.

1. Start from the exact part number

Search by the OEM or supplier part number when you have it. Similar names can cover different sizes, voltages or mounting styles, so a name match alone does not confirm fit. Check dimensions, bus make, model and year with the supplier or a qualified technician before ordering.

2. Compare the same item, not just the same name

Look at what each listing actually sells: a single unit, a pair, a kit or a box. Accessories such as brackets, lenses or gaskets are often listed with similar wording. PartsCompare filters out listings that do not contain the actual part you searched for, but you should still read the supplier's description.

3. Separate in stock from orderable

"In stock" means the supplier reported physical stock. "Orderable" only means they accept orders, and the part may ship later. If a bus is down, a slightly higher price for in-stock stock can cost less overall than waiting.

4. Work out the delivered cost

The listed unit price is only part of the total. Add pack-size rounding (buying 10 when you need 6), supplier minimum order amounts, and shipping, which is usually charged once per supplier order. Core charges are refundable deposits, so keep them separate from the price you are comparing.

5. Decide whether to split the order

Buying each item from its cheapest supplier can add extra shipping charges. Sometimes one or two suppliers cost less in total. The order planner compares these combinations for your whole list.

6. Check the date and confirm before you buy

Every price on PartsCompare shows when it was last checked. Supplier prices and availability can change, so confirm the final price, stock, lead time, shipping, tax and any core charge directly with the supplier before ordering.
